Wellness Wednesdays – Upcoming Classes

Are you looking for more ways to add fresh, local food to your diet?  Do you want to cook at home more often in order to save money and have better health?  Then you will enjoy the new Wellness Wednesdays classes being offered at Basics Cooperative.  Our own market manager, Stephanie Aegerter, will be presenting this once per month class series starting Wednesday, January 14th.  Topics will range from green smoothies and salads to warming soups and fun with fermentation.  Call Basics Cooperative to sign up (608)754-3925.

Green Smoothies

Green Smoothies Galore – Wednesday, January 14th at 6:00 PM – New Recipes!

Come share an hour with farmers’ market manager Stephanie Aegerter and her blender. We will make and sample at least three different green smoothies.  You will have an opportunity to taste compare a smoothie made with fresh vegetables to some of the popular greens powders that are available.  Learn about the various benefits and cautions of drinking your vegetables.  Find out which green smoothies might be right for you.  Take home several recipes to get you started.

Yogurt with MeusliMake Your Own Yogurt – Wednesday, February 11th

You will be amazed at how simple and inexpensive it can be to add home-made yogurt to your routine. In this free class, taught by Farmers Market Manager Stephanie Aegerter, you will get recipes and ideas for dairy yogurt, reduced lactose yogurt and non-dairy yogurt.   We will talk about various incubation methods, starters and some tricks and tools you can use to get started.  You will also learn how to interpret yogurt labels to make sure you are buying the real thing.

Stock in a Crock PotHome-Made Stock – Wednesday, March 11th

Your grandma was onto something when she talked about the health benefits of her home-made chicken soup!  Today, the health benefits of home-made stock and broth are well-known, yet many people are still substituting bouillon or canned broth.  This class will show you how easy it can be to make your own stock and use it to naturally enhance the flavor and nutrition in your everyday cooking.  You will get recipes, cooking techniques and storage tips.  We will also discuss the health benefits and best ways to incorporate this kitchen staple into your routine.

 

 

Instructor 

Classes will be taught by Stephanie Aegerter, Farmers’ Market Manager.  Stephanie has a BA in environmental studies from Cornell College and a Health Coach Certificate from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition.  She has been teaching classes in cooking, health and environmental studies for over ten years, including five years as a “Neighborhood Naturalist” for the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board.  She enjoys making healthy, local food from scratch, especially when it involves some form of fermentation.  Janesville Farmers Market, Inc. recently received a Farmers’ Market Promotion Program (FMPP) Grant from the USDA to help provide food education at the market and in the community.  Wellness Wednesday Classes are offered in partnership with Basics Cooperative Natural Foods.  Look for more classes to be offered throughout the year!
